1 killed, 9 injured in Hwy 12 chain-reaction crash in Santa Rosa

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (KTVU) - One person was killed and nine were taken to the hospital on Thursday following a multi-vehicle collision on westbound Highway 12 in Santa Rosa, officials say. 

The Santa Rosa Fire Department said the roadway closed between Stony Point Road and Fulton Road. The road reopened at around 4:10 p.m. 

The collision was reported at around 11:50 a.m., when a dump truck plowed into a line of 11 vehicles waiting at a red light on Highway 12 at Fulton Road, officials said. 

The dump truck hauling dirt didn't stop and rear-ended the last car in line, creating a chain reaction that killed one person and sent nine people to the hospital. Three of them had major injuries officials with the California Highway Patrol said.

About half of the vehicles had "quite a bit of damage," a CHP spokesperson said, and one pickup truck caught fire.  

In an update, Santa Rosa fire said the driver of the pickup truck on fire was dead before the fire department arrived. The driver's name has not been released. 

The fire was extinguished in 20 minutes, the department said. 

California Highway Patrol responded to the scene along with firefighters and medical personnel.  Santa Rosa Police Department are assisting with removal and redirection of vehicles stopped in traffic. 

It's not known if alcohol or drugs factored in the collision. 

CHP is investigating.
