MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Pope Francis, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church and the first Latin pontiff, passed away at the age of 88.

The Catholic community in Salinas is reacting to his death with sadness, reflection, and prayer.

Quiet chapels and packed pews, the passing of Pope Francis is being felt deeply on the Central Coast.

"I was sad to hear that he passed away because we've all been praying for his recovery, hoping that he would recover from his recent illnesses and hospitalizations, said Kathy Lett, who lives in Salinas.

Many remember Pope Francis for his progressive views, humble mentality, and as a beacon of hope.

"He was very open and loving and welcomed so many people into our faith. And it's very sad to hear that he had passed away, but just thankful for all the good that he did during his lifetime," said Joanne Burgonio, who lives in Salinas.

"He was not a pretentious person and lived very simply, whereas he could have had all the riches of the church at his fingertips, and he didn't. And I think his humble service, I think, was quite an example for us," said Lett.

On Easter Sunday, a day before his death, he blessed thousands of people in St. Peter's Square.

In a letter from bishop Daniel Garcia from the Catholic Diocese of Monterey, he says:

"It is comforting to know that he now lives in that same Easter light that he dedicated his life to proclaiming and living. Just as the beloved holy father has accompanied us with his love and guidance these past years, let us now accompany him with our prayers."

"I think he laid up groundwork as best he could for the future of the church and knowing that he probably had limited time, so I think that he did his best to lay groundwork for continuance and change in the church," said Lett.

No date for the funeral has been announced, but it must be held four to six days after his death.
