The CHP warns people about an Amber Alert scam

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The Santa Cruz CHP announced Saturday that there is currently an Amber Alert scam happening across the state.

They said that scammers are posing as “AMBER Alert representatives” and offering to “register” people's children.

The CHP says that the scammers are asking for confidential information and to meet scamming victims at their homes.

"This is NOT how the AMBER Alert system works!" Warns the CHP. "The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is the only agency authorized to activate AMBER Alerts—no registration is required."

They are reminding people not to provide personal information or answer calls from potential scammer numbers, and if they encounter a scam, to please report that to law enforcement agencies immediately.
