Alisal Union Unified School rumors school threats
SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV): Some parents and students have concerns after online threats were made against two elementary schools in Salinas.
Alisal Union School District said the threats were rumors, and Salinas Police said the threats are not credible. Parents received a text message from the district last Tuesday night about alleged threats being made to the two schools.
Those two schools were Creekside and John E. Steinbeck Elementary. District leaders said students had seen the alleged threats to their school on Tiktok and Instagram.
However, the district said no district personnel received a threat directly, and district administrators could not locate the threats the students referred to right away. This still concerned some parents.
"My only concern is that the school has not participated in any intruder drills for various years," said an anonymous parent. "The last time that our students participated in the drill in that nature it was a combined drill which was intruder and fire drill, which poses a concern because the students don't know the appropriate way to respond."
The parent who wanted to remain anonymous said she has two of her kids at John E. Steinback Elementary School. The district said the last time the two elementary schools had an active shooter drill was last school year, where they held drills for evacuations.
Which used to be called earthquake drill, and lockdown and barricade drills. The district said they quickly notified Salinas Police about the alleged school threats.
Parents said they just want their kids to feel safe at school, and they said having more drills and training on active shooters scenarios is important.
"Having more trainings on hands, so having our students participate in drills more frequently, having our staff members participate in adequate training," said the anonymous parent.
District leaders said police went to the schools the following morning after the alleged school threats were made. Parents also asked the school district to be more transparent with parents.
"We talk about transparency a lot in our district," said the anonymous parent. "They definitely did not fully advise or inform parents of the severity of the nature is and us parents, we want follow up, what happened."
We reached out Salinas Police to see if they could talk to us about the concerns some of these parents have, but they told us they wouldn't be able to do that today.
