Local reaction on SUHSD middle schools to implement phone free environment during school hours

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV): Middle school students in the Salinas Union High School District (SUHSD) will soon have to put away their phones while on campus this Fall.

Something people who live in Salinas said they're praising this decision.

"They don't go out to play anymore, like play soccer like they used to before iPhones existed," said Enrique Aceves, who lives in Salinas. "That's why kids nowadays don't learn too well and they're obese."

The district said phones will be locked away in a YONDR pouch. Students will keep the pouches with them, unlocking them once they leave campus.

Clinical psychologists said it's a good program to put in place because there are some negative effects for kids who have too much screen time.

"We know especially with young kids, screen time can lead to poor executive function, which is really our ability to control our impulses, control our behaviors," said Clinical Psychologist at OHANA, Michelle Tan.

Some behaviors impacted by having too much screen time include a child's sleep patterns.

"It starts impacting how our brain regulates our sleep, so kids will more and more have worse quality of sleep," said Tan. She said screen time is all about moderation.

The district said the goal of the program is creating a more focused and distraction-free environment for students.

"That's why kids don't learn; they're too busy looking at their phones and they don't pay attention in school," said Aceves.
