Alameda shooting: Husband kills wife, child, in-laws in family tragedy

ALAMEDA, Calif. (KTVU-TV) -- A husband killed his wife, a young son, and his in-laws before being arrested in Alameda, in a Wednesday night family tragedy that has shocked the small island community, police said.

Alameda Police Chief Nishant Joshi told KTVU on Thursday that the husband also shot and injured his second young son, who was taken to the hospital with critical injuries following a 9 p.m. mass shooting at their home on Kitty Hawk Road.

The husband was identified as 54-year-old Shane Killian. He was arrested on four counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and gun violations.

Jail records show he is being held on no bail. He was arrested Wednesday at 9:02 p.m. and booked at Santa Rita Jail at 7 a.m. Thursday. 

When police were called out to the home by a neighbor, Nishant said they found "multiple firearms and significant evidence" linking the husband to the crime.

No motive has been revealed for the deaths.

Nishant called this a "horrific loss of life."

The Alameda County coroner's van was parked in front of the house early Thursday and seen taking away the bodies of two adults. 

Neighbors in the normally quiet neighborhood were outside their homes Thursday morning consoling each other.

One neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, described the family as multi-generational, with at least two grandparents, a mother and at least one child.

She described them as friendly and outgoing. They had just moved into this home a couple of months ago. 

She said the grandfather introduced himself to her and a little boy who lived there was sweet. He appeared to be about 6 years old, she said. 

"It is so tragic," the neighbor said. "I just can't imagine what would have gone through someone's mind to go in and shoot. I just can't."
