Hollister man sentenced to four years in prison for arson and assault on a peace officer
HOLLISTER, Calif. (KION) - UPDATE ON JUNE 13, 2023 AT 3:08 PM- San Benito County District Attorney Joel Buckingham confirmed on Tuesday that 31-year-old Brandon Hill was sentenced to four years in state prison on June 8.
The 31-year-old Hill was charged with arson, assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, and making criminal threats against police officers and family members
Buckingham said that Hill pleaded guilty to arson of a structure and two felony counts of “resisting executive officer by force,” on May 10.
In California Penal Code 69, resisting executive officers by force involves “attempting to prevent officers from carrying out their lawful responsibilities through the use of force or intimidation.”
A report from a court-appointed doctor to San Benito County Superior Court found that Hill was mentally incompetent to stand trial.
In February 2023, the court received an evaluation that Hill was deemed competent to stand trial.
The situation happened on Dec. 8, 2020, two Hollister Police Officers responded to a 911 call about a disturbance at a home on Kimberley Court.
Family members said that Hill was threatening them. In the body cam footage above, Hill initially refused to show his hands.
Officers found that he was holding a knife that he refused to put down. Hill is seen in the video throwing multiple objects at officers and turning on a stove burner which started a small fire.
During the situation, a Hollister Police Officer fired his gun which hit Hill in the abdomen.

The Hollister Police Department has released new video from a shooting that happened on Dec. 8.
Police said two officers responded to a 911 call about a disturbance at a home on Kimberley Court. Family members said the man, identified as Brandon Hill, was threatening them.

After initially refusing to show his hands, officers found that he was holding a knife that he refused to put down. Hill is then seen in body cam video throwing multiple objects at the officers and turning on a stove burner, starting a small fire.
At one point, one of the officers fired his gun, hitting Hill in the abdomen. They applied first aid until paramedics arrived and took him to a trauma center. He survived the injury.
Police said Hill is facing four felony charges in connection to the incident.
