Ordinance allowing for cannabis testing lab in Monterey passed
MONTEREY, Calif. (KION) The Monterey City Council passed an ordinance Tuesday night that would allow for a cannabis testing lab in the Ryan Ranch office park.
The ordinance amending the city's zoning code was passed in a four-to-one vote. This comes after city council members passed a temporary moratorium on all cannabis activity in February.
The lab will be strictly for testing. It will not be open to the public for retail.
According to state law, cannabis is required to undergo "batch testing" before being sold to retailers, and having a lab in Monterey would provide a local option for testing.
The Monterey County Board of Supervisors also adopted an initial study for 45 cultivation sites in the Salinas area. They have the potential for more than 9 million square feet of cultivation.
