Homemade explosive devices found in San Benito County

San Benito County Sheriff's Office

SAN BENITO COUNTY, Calif. (KION)

UPDATE 11/11/2020 10:30 a.m. The suspicious homemade explosive devices detonated by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office were found in an abandoned trailer, according to Captain Eric Taylor with the San Benito County Sheriff's Office.

Taylor said deputies were called to the trailer when the landlord said the devices were found while cleaning up a trailer on their property. The tenant had been evicted in September, and the trailer has been empty ever since, according to the landlord.

Deputies said the explosives looked like modified fireworks, and when they reached out to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, they told deputies that they may be more unstable because they were in water.

The San Benito County Sheriff's Office is investigating to find out whether the former tenant had anything to do with devices and if anyone else has had access to the trailer. If a suspect is developed, the Sheriff's Office said they could face multiple felony counts of manufacturing and possession of improvised explosive devices.

PREVIOUS STORY: The San Benito County Sheriff's Office said explosive devices have been detonated with the help of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies found what they called suspicious homemade explosive devices, and they called the neighboring agency for help because San Benito County does not have a bomb team.

When the Monterey County Sheriff's Office responded, they said the devices were more unstable because they were in water, and an X-ray showed that they had shrapnel in them, according to the San Benito County Sheriff's Office.

The devices were taken to a shooting range where they were detonated.
