UCSC police conclude no crime committed after rope found hanging from street sign
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) After an investigation into an incident involving a rope found hanging from a street sign, UC Santa Cruz police concluded that no crime was committed.
On July 2, police responded to a report of the rope on street signs at the main entrance of the university. It was not tied to the sign, but it had a loop at one end, so the circumstances around it were investigated as a possible bias-related incident.
Video taken at the time showed four people putting the rope there after several attempts, taking a picture of it and then leaving the area.
Police said the four people involved were identified as UC Santa Cruz students who were interviewed and reportedly cooperated with police.
The investigation has finished, and police found that no crime was committed.
"Although this incident was not classified as a crime, it does not diminish the impact or harm this incident had on the UC Santa Cruz community," police said in a statement.
Police referred the incident to the Dean of Students Conduct and Communication for review and and administrative proceedings.
