MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION) The California Highway Patrol confirms that a driver died as a result of a crash on Chualar Canyon Road.

The agency said the driver was in a Ford pulling a 15-foot flatbed utility trailer Friday at around 9:40 p.m. east of Old Stage Road. The exact speed of the vehicle is unknown, but the CHP said it was a high speed.

As the vehicle approached a slight left curve, the CHP said the driver lost control of it. It left its lane, and the trailer hit a large oak tree near the road. At that point, the CHP said it was turned toward the road edge and went up a dirt embankment before overturning onto the shoulder.

The trailer detached from the vehicle and slid about 250 to 300 feet before hitting a power pole. The impact caused the top to shear off and about 200 residents nearby lost power.

The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash is still under investigation, but the CHP said it suspects alcohol was a contributing factor.
