CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. (KION) Early damage assessments show the areas destroyed by the Carmel Fire.

A map from the Monterey County Office of Emergency Services indicates there is damage along Cachagua Rd, Sky Ranch Rd, Asoleado Dr and Trampa Rd. Not all homes along these roads were damaged and assessments indicate that a number of buildings were spared.

KION drove up to the tops of the hillsides to Sky Ranch Road and
found several houses burnt to the ground. Charred wood and burnt rubble are left behind at some of the homes.

“I’m just sick–as many neighbors lost their homes as they did. It just won’t
be the same place again,” said Myron Wyckoff, a veteran who lives on Sky Ranch.

Wyckoff and his wife Velda told KION they stayed behind as the flames
roared.

“When i saw the flames starting to cover the roads down below as I we turned to come in here so we decided to stay,” Wyckoff said.

Thankfully they weren't hurt and their home was spared.

“We feel very fortunate that the firefighters were so good and we just feel
fortunate that we still have our house,” Velda Wyckoff said.

And other homes down the road were saved too.

We found damage accessors with the county as we headed up the hill. They told us the blackened hillside could present a problem when the seasons change and cause “mudflows.”

They’ll have to return to winterize the area.

It will take time to rebuild, but locals are staying hopeful.

“I pray for everybody that lost their homes. At least you survived yourself
and that’s the main thing,” said Carmel Valley resident Christine Allaire.
