Man found on fire off Highway 101 near Gilroy Friday
SANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif. (CBS SF and KION) The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office is investigating an incident that left a man on fire on the side of Highway 101 south of Gilroy Friday.
Authorities told the CBS affiliate in San Francisco that the man later died.
Deputies responded to the area shortly before 3 a.m. when California Highway Patrol officers found the man burning on the side of the highway near the Sargent overcrossing, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The victim, identified as 40-year-old Jerry Mungaray of Gilroy, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He died later that night.
Mungaray's sister, Jasmine Richards, asked for help solving the case on Facebook, saying he was last seen Thursday night in a verbal fight with people in two cars in front of a Gilroy 7-Eleven.
KPIX said the sheriff's office has not mentioned a fight at the 7-Eleven or anything else that might have led to Mungaray's death, but anyone with information is asked to call the Investigative Services Division at 408-808-4500 or 408-808-4431 to remain anonymous.
