SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) The Santa Cruz Police Department has a new officer, K-9 Parker.

Police say Parker, a 1.5-year-old Labrador Retriever, will be working alongside his handler, Officer Brian George, in the patrol division. The two have already finished a 6-week law enforcement canine training together.

Parker and George will mainly help officers with drug investigations. Police say Parker is certified in narcotics detection and a great working dog, but also does well connecting with people.

Because of Parker's personality, police say George and Parker can also participate in community outreach and ease tensions with crime victims and children.
