Man arrested on murder charges in connection to Friday night shooting in Salinas
SALINAS, Calif. (KION) An 18-year-old was arrested on murder, attempted murder and gang charges in connection to a Salinas shooting.
The shooting happened Friday. Officers responded to a report of two people shot just before 5:30 p.m. It happened in a homeless camp in the wooded area east of the County Yard facility in the 800 block of East Laurel Drive.
When they got there, officers said they found two people with gunshot wounds. One, a 28-year-old man, died at the scene. The other, a 53-year-old man, was taken to a hospital where he is expected to survive.
Saturday morning, officers responded to a report of a person with a gunshot wound at the same homeless camp at around 8:30 a.m. The 29-year-old man was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. He had apparently hidden from police in the woods Friday night.
Thursday afternoon, detectives along with SWAT, the Violence Suppression Task Force and U.S. Marshals found and arrested 18-year-old John Barriga Macias when they stopped him on N. Main Street near Russell Road at about 1:45 p.m. After that, the SWAT team served a search warrant at an apartment complex on the 2400 block of N. Main Street.
Macias was booked into the Monterey County Jail.
