PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (KION) With Monterey County releasing some loosened shelter-in-place orders, golf courses are allowed to re-open.

Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course opened Monday with a set of strict social distancing rules and procedures.

Some other rules are: courses must close gathering spaces like locker rooms and lounges, golfers are required to leave quickly after their rounds, and tee times have been spaced out.

The golf shop is closed and only online bookings are allowed. Only one rider can be in a cart unless its with a person you live with.

“No rakes in the bunkers, flag sticks remain in the holes at all times and we’ve put a foam insert in the cup so it just barely crusts over the edge," Pebble Beach director of golf John Sawin said. "We’re just trying to remove all of the touch points.”

There was only about a fourth of the tee sheet filled up Monday, but those who did get to play 18 said they felt it was safe to play.

“It's been a challenge to stay active, and I’m fortunate where we get to play a sport where we can keep social distance while staying active,” San Mateo resident Ken Takeshi said.

“To be out in the wilderness with your friends on the most beautiful place on the planet, and I feel like we’re a safe distance a part. I think it should be welcomed,” Matt Pingatory said.

The rest of Pebble Beach resorts remains closed Monday. Hotel reservations will be accepted for arrivals starting June 1st.

“This is really just a starting block for us and the goal is for the rest of the resort to follow as the county orders allow,” Sawin said.

All golf courses across the Central Coast are now allowed to re-open. Health experts say the spread of COVID-19 is much less likely outdoors.
