Sheriff’s Office reports scam targeting parents of children taking SAT/ACT
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (KION) The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office is warning parents of children taking the SAT or ACT of a scam.
Parents tell the Sheriff's Office they were contacted by someone claiming to be from the SAT/ACT Prep Center. The caller said the child's name and home address and told the parents that their child had requested SAT or ACT prep materials.
Parents said the caller told them a packet with information and two CD's will be mailed to the house, but that the CD's need to be returned within 30 days. The caller then asked for credit card information to charge parents if they were not returned, according to the parents.
The Sheriff's Office said the phone number the caller used was an 831 number, so it looks local.
Officials warn that parents should verify information through the direct source and not give information to anyone you are not expecting a call from.
