Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg visits Monterey
Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg gave a speech in Monterey this afternoon. In it, he expressed the need to protect all the nature here on Central Coast.
Citing wildfires and rising sea levels, Bloomberg really focused on the damage to human life and state finances that climate change has caused.
After his speech, in a one-on-one interview, Bloomberg said that part of he reason he came specifically to Monterey is because of the role that the environment plays in everyday life here.
“If you want to pick one place, if you care about the environment, this is where you should come," Bloomberg said. "You just have to look at what we have to do in the oceans and it’s right here.”
As a potential solution, he pointed out his campaign's climate plan. Specifically, he wants to cut all carbon emissions by 50% by the year 2030. He says that would involve closing every remaining coal-fired power plant by that year.
While Bloomberg spent some time rallying support for these measures, he also spent a portion of his speech explaining why he would be a better choice for voters than President Trump would be.
