Castroville mobile home park in the dark after breaker box blows
CASTROVILLE, Calif. (KION) Hundreds of people are without power Friday night at a mobile home park in Castroville, and temperatures are ready to dip.
An electrical issue on site at Monte Del Lago caused the problem residents were told would be fixed by the afternoon, but property management tells KION the lights are staying dark until late Saturday afternoon as they continue to work on the issue.
"I made sure I had all my candles and tried not to open the refrigerator," said Patti Douglas, a Monte Del Lago resident.
At about 10 a.m. on Friday, a breaker box blew out, cutting power to residents at the mobile home park. People living there received a letter posted on their doors from the management staff saying they "may be without power for an undisclosed time."
The staff says their crews were unable to fix the breaker Friday night. Residents, however, say communication is still lacking. They want more answers, especially with a cold night approaching.
"When we tried to call the office, you get the answering service. And of course, the answering service doesn't really know much, they couldn't tell us anything," said Douglas.
Many have resorted to using candles and blankets to stay comfortable and warm overnight, but there are some concerns about people who need electricity for their medical equipment.
Others are lucky enough to have good friends.
"Well, good thing my neighbor, he's a good neighbor of mine… he lent me his generator," said Robert Morales, another Monte Del Lago resident.
PG&E tells KION they cut off power after learning about the equipment failure issue, and they are waiting on the park management to get everything in place before restoring it.
Park management is planning on bringing in a generator late Saturday afternoon to power the entire complex until they fix the breaker.
