Central Coast collection sites for 2019 National Prescription Drug Takeback Day

The annual National Prescription Drug Takeback Day is this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and there are several locations where you can drop off unused or unwanted prescriptions- no questions asked.

Drop off locations include:

Monterey County Sheriff’s Office 250 Franciscan Way, King City Gonzales Police Department 109 4th Street, Gonzales Fort Hunter Liggett 80 Infantry Road, Jolon Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, Prunetree Center lot ,17579 Vierra Canyon Road, Salinas Monterey County Sheriff’s Office 1414 Natividad Road, Salinas California Highway Patrol 960 E. Blanco Road, Salinas Marina Police Department 211 Hillcrest Avenue, Marina Presidio of Monterey Police 4240 Gigling Road, Seaside Seaside Police Department 440 Harcourt Avenue, Seaside Monterey County Sheriff’s Office 1200 Aguajito Road, Monterey Monterey Police Department 351 Madison Street, Monterey Pacific Grove Police Department 580 Pine Avenue, Pacific Grove Carmel Police Department Junipero Street & 4th Avenue, Carmel Hollister Police Department, Target parking lot, 1790 Airline Highway, Hollister

There are currently no collection sites listed in Santa Cruz County. According to the CDC, almost 400,000 Americans died from prescription and illicit opioid overdoses between 1999 and 2017. A recent report shows that the largest drug companies distributed 76 billion pain pills at the hight of a nationwide epidemic.

Since Friday, two people have died of suspected drug overdoses, one in Seaside and the other in Hollister. There were two overdoses in two days in San Benito County, and in Monterey County, there have been at least five overdoses since Friday. Officials believe the overdoses are linked to counterfeit drugs containing Fentanyl.
