Seacliff State Beach: Red tides return to West Coast

Seacliff State Beach posted on social media that red tides have returned to the West Coast.

In the post, it said the tide is not a threat to human health as long as shellfish are not harvested or eaten between May and October.

It said the rapid algae bloom that colors the water sucks up oxygen, and that can make it difficult for marine life to breathe. It can also create a foam that interferes with the natural oils on seabirds and toxins that build up in food webs.

State parks said the red tide can stay for several days, and we can expect to see more like this as we enter autumn.
