Pacific Grove man sentenced for voter registration fraud wanted to prove the system is flawed
A Pacific Grove man was sentenced for voter registration fraud, and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said he did it to prove the voter registration system is flawed. Richard Davis was sentenced to probation.
On October 22, 2018, the Monterey County Elections Department got an online voter registration form. It was in the name of Eugene Davis, who was born in 1923, but the elections department found out that Eugene Davis was dead.
On October 24, 2018, Eugene Davis’ grandson Richard called the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office to report that he registered his dead grandfather to vote to prove that the voter registration system is flawed. Richard Davis also admitted to registering his dog Cooper to vote in 2013. The elections department found the fraud in 2013 and did not register the dog to vote. Davis was warned at the time not to do it again.
Davis was sentenced to three years of probation, and during that time he cannot register anyone but himself to vote. He also cannot use the online voter registration system and cannot threaten or harass employees of the election department. He will be required to complete 48 hours of community service.
