UPDATE 6/24/2019 10:57 p.m. Power has been restored to affected customers.
PREVIOUS STORY: Thousands of Monterey PG&E customers are without power.
Pacific Gas & Electric say 2,461 of their customers are in the dark.
The utility company says at 7:59 p.m. Monday, 9,393 customers in Monterey, Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach were without power. The only customers still without power are in Monterey.
PG&E would not confirm what the cause of the outage was but The Monterey Police Department tells KION one of their officers was near the intersection, of North Fremont St. and Della Vina Ave. when a transformer blew.
Stop lights at nearby intersections have been affected and there are also downed power lines. Police ask that people use caution and follow their instructions when approaching the area.
PG&E says they are on the scene and are working quickly and safely to restore power.
There is no estimated time of restoration.
