Fresno County coroner looking for family of man killed in officer involved shooting

The Fresno County Sheriff’s coroner is looking for the family of a man shot and killed in an officer involved shooting, and they believe he may have ties to Salinas.

The man is 59-year-old Esteban Martinez. He was homeless, and detectives want to find his family so he can have a chance at a proper burial.

The incident happened on May 19 in Huron just after 9 p.m. Police in Huron responded to a report of a screaming woman at a gas station. When they got there, two officers found two men fighting in the parking lot. Officers tried to separate the men, and one did what they said. The other man, Martinez, resisted police and had a deadly weapon. One of the officers shot him and he died at the scene.

The two men who fought did not know each other, and the cause of the fight is still under investigation. An autopsy has been performed on Martinez, and his cause of death is pending the results of toxicology tests. Detectives are scheduling interviews with the officers involved.

If you have any information, you are asked to call Detective Jose Diaz at 559-600-8204.
