Seal pupping season underway in Pacific Grove
Seal pupping season is in full swing right now on the Central Coast.
Two more babies were born in Pacific Grove on Wednesday morning. The baby is still nameless, but her mother is well known. In fact, the mother named Dotty McScarbelly is a favorite on the Harbor Seals of Pacific Grove Facebook page.
People have been coming to the area in Pacific Grove off 5th street every day so they don’t miss a thing.
“We saw it actually feeding so it’s been really cute. I’m just hoping that people will you know be vigilant and kind and enjoy them rather than getting too noisy and harass them,” said Pacific Grove resident Edie Stein.
Making too much noise can disrupt the seals and scare them away. People are welcome to come and watch, but they must keep a safe distance. Visitors are also being encouraged to stay behind the fences. Kayakers also shouldn’t get too close to the seals.
“Because seals out of the water frighten easily and we don’t want to be scaring any moms away because if the moms are really frightened, they won’t come back,” said Thom Akeman, Bay Net Volunteer.
So far there have been six pups born this season and there are several more expected over the next two months.
