Rain and wind expected for already saturated soil

People across the Central Coast are gearing up for another round of wet weather, as rain and wind are making their way in. And those in the Santa Cruz Mountains, will be battling a little more than most, with wind and rain expected.

With the upcoming storm, residents are getting prepared. Stocking up on things like, food and water. Randy Alvs lives in Boulder Creek. She says, “Last time there was only one way out of town, so I just want to make sure we are prepared for it this time.”

The Central Coast has acted like a sponge this winter, soaking up all the rain and making the ground saturated. While this is a good thing, the downside is these conditions make the rainy weather a little more dangerous. With moderate to heavy rain possible in Santa Cruz County, the risk for isolated flooding and mudslides are higher. But the city says they are prepared. “We have everybody out right now doing prep. Filling potholes, clearing culverts, and getting some sites covered in plastic that might incur some damage,” says Vance Wagner, with Public Works.

Public Works will have all of its workers out over the next couple days, so they can quickly respond to any downed trees or power lines that may occur. To be prepared, make sure to stock up on a little extra food and water- just in case.
