Missing man’s car found north of Davenport

UPDATE 12/27/18 5:45 p.m. The car belonging to a man who has been missing for nearly two months was found just north of Davenport.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said it needs help finding 28-year-old Justin Liu, an army veteran, who has been missing since the end of October.

His car was found alongside Highway 1, just north of Davenport on Nov. 19.

“The vehicle he was driving was found just north of davenport about three weeks after he left Southern California. The vehicle was as it was parked so several items and loose belongings were inside including his wallet, cell phones and other personal items,” says Sgt. Dee Baldwin with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.

Friends and family of Liu tell KION this is not like him, “completely out of character, he’s a very kind hearted person he was always going out of his way to see what he could do to help a friend or to kind of get everybody together and hang out. He was kind of the common ground,” says Amber Libbon who served with Liu in the army.

Liu’s brother, Jay, also tells KION he was last heard from around Halloween when he was visiting San Francisco.

As of now, the Sheriff’s Office is not investigating this case as suspicious because no foul play has been detected, “investigators conducted an extensive search of the area of the vehicle, we examined the cell phone and we searched all of the available items that we could to try and locate where Mr. Liu is and at this point we don’t have any information,” says Sgt. Baldwin.

Liu was driving a blue Toyota C-HR and was believed to be heading to Seattle from Southern California. He was described by the sheriff’s office as 6 feet tall, weighing 180 pounds.

Now his friends and family are just hoping for his safe return, “there’s a lot of unanswered questions, and everybody just wants him to come home and want to know if he’s safe, and know if he’s okay,” says Libbon.

Another thing Libbon added was Justin’s given name is Shih Wen Liu, but he is more commonly known as Justin.
