Freshmen Focus: Greenfield High School

The first semester for high school freshmen isn’t quite close to being over. Students at Greenfield High are looking to stay on track to graduate in 2022.

We heard from a few to see what concerns they have about the future, some of which related to school, but others related to politics and society.

“I have a bunch of friends who are gay or bisexual,” says Greenfield High School Freshman, Denzel Isidro. “Sometimes throughout the years I’ve seen a lot of bullying because of that and it really broke my heart.”

Honore Preisser spoke on current events, including the recent Brett Kavanaugh hearings. She says the person accusing Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her–Christine Blasey Ford–is being treated unfairly.

Preisser also addressed the misconceptions people have about teens and politics.

“I know that people say teenagers don’t know much about anything but I think we’ve been exposed to it so much through social media that we tend to know a lot more than the people before us,” Preisser says.

Preisser and Isidro’s concerns also extended to their studies, of course, with Isidro keeping the health of people in mind as he wants to get on track to work in the medical field.

“I want to specialize in cardiovascular, heart transplants. Maybe work as a surgeon or work in the ER rooms of the hospitals,” Isidro explains.

Isidro also says he wants to help kids to ease another misconception which shows doctors can be scary.

“I want to make sure I’m the friendly doctor who maybe gives the kid a lollipop or something,” he says.

The possibility of learning about aerospace in engineering classes has otherwise peaked the interest of Honore Preisser.

This has to do with her hopes to learn how to fly planes, which she already has experience doing.

“It’s really cool to see it from a different perspective because everyone looks really small,” Preisser explains. “I’ve flown on a lot of airplanes and had never flown them myself.”

Preisser hopes to go to Stanford in the future. She says she may pick up air force and ROTC related classes along the way.
