UPDATE: 5-year-old boy ejected during rollover crash on Hwy 1

A 5-year-old boy was ejected from a truck during a rollover accident on Highway 1 in Santa Cruz County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a Watsonville woman was driving southbound on Highway 1 near Park Avenue in a 2000 Toyota Tacoma when she lost control and hit a center divide.

The accident happened around 9 a.m. Tuesday.

CHP said the 40-year-old driver admitted to being on her cell phone when she lost control of the Tacoma and rolled it down the highway. The child in the car was ejected from the Toyota. CHP said he was not properly fastened in a car seat. He suffered major injuries and was transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

A portion of northbound and southbound lanes were shut down.

All lanes reopened around 11 a.m.

“Tragically this child could have been uninjured if he were in the proper seat,” the CHP said

CHP would like to remind the public that they will install a car seat for those in need free of cost.

This article has been corrected. CHP first reported the child was 7-years-old but child involved in the crash is 5-years-old.
