Dangerous sand caves found at Marina State Beach
The Marina State Beach cliffside recently got a remodel that could pose a danger to beach-goers.
The cliffside of Marina State Beach has become a popular location for people to carve out cave-like holes.
What people don’t know is that they are leaving behind a dangerous playground for kids.
Some people worry that those who wander up the cliffs and into the caves may be at risk. Cases of children becoming trapped under sand are not uncommon to the Central Coast.
The last incident was in Santa Cruz when a young boy was rushed to the hospital after the hole he was digging, collapsed.
Chief Jack Lungren of the Marina Fire Department offered some advice to beach goers.
“One, it’s very unstable. Basically if the person becomes engulfed in there, you know, they might lose oxygen, and then they can’t breathe or they might ingest sand because of being scared,” said Chief Lungren.
Although it isn’t clear when the digging started, warnings of the danger have yet to be posted.
For now, beach-goers are advised to stay off the cliffs and out of the caves. In case of an accident, reports are to be sent to the state parks office or the Marina Fire Department.
