Monterey County Fair taking precautions to prevent swine flu

The Monterey County Fair is taking steps to protect people from the “swine flu” at this year’s fair.

The fair is making sure all of the pigs undergo rigorous inspections to prevent any infected pigs from being exhibited.

“Every year we see a few cases nationwide of swine flu, in humans,” said Brian Hartl, a Michigan epidemiologist. “It’s common in swine, pigs, but when it jumps to humans, that’s a rare occurrence.”

Right now there are no restrictions for showing healthy pigs at the fair, but exhibitors are being told that pigs with signs of respiratory illness including nasal discharge or coughing, should not be taken to the fair.

The fair is also urging people working with pigs to follow proper biosecurity, hygiene and health management practices, including limiting contact between animals, clean and disinfecting equipment between uses and washing hands before and after with animals.

Exhibitors are also being encouraged to quarantine new pigs before placing them with others as well as limiting visitors in the area. It’s also important to properly clean and disinfect vehicles and equipment.

Anyone at high risk of swine flu complications should avoid pigs and the swine barn at the fair.

If you are planning to attend the fair would like to see the pigs and aren’t high risk for swine flu complications, the fair has some tips for preventative measures to take:

Don’t eat or drink or put anything in your mouth in the pig barn and show arena Don’t take toys, pacifiers, cups, bottles, strollers or similar items in the pig barn and show arena Wash your hands often with soap and water before and after contact with pigs, or use an alcohol based hand rub. If you are sick with a flu-like illness, stay home.

The Monterey County Fair will be held from August 30-Sept. 3rd at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center.
