Thousands of disaster kits stuffed at Monterey event

Thousands of disaster kits are ready to go out to those who need them most.

AAA teamed up with a Central Coast non-profit to make it happen at a Monday event.

It was a massive operation to stuff 10,000 small bags, each filled with critical items.

“They’re starter disaster preparedness kits so toothbrushes, toothpaste razors, a flashlight, a radio all the necessities you need to get started with having a strong disaster preparedness kit,” said Tasha Tolbert vice president of Community Impact.

AAA teaming up with Monterey County non-profit CERV to help bring the kits to underserved communities and those with disabilities.

CERV is facilitating where many of the kits will go.

“Organizations, faith-based groups in our community that actually work with individuals, serve these individuals who have disabilities or access and functional needs of which there are about 50 percent of the population,” said Sara Blackstone, who sits on the Board of Directors.

The kits are prepared to head out to those people, both AAA and CERV say it’s an important reminder for all to be prepared.

“Disasters happen rarely and they are devastating but emergencies happen every single day,” Blackstone said, “If you’re prepared for a disaster you are also prepared for the inevitable emergency.”
