Orcas kill another baby gray whale in Monterey Bay
A family of killer whales hunting and killing a baby gray whale was captured on video in the Monterey Bay.
The attack lasted more than two hours on April 17, near Moss Landing.
Capt. Giancarlo Thomae told KION the calf’s 50-foot, 40-ton mother was trying to save her baby calf.
“She lifted the calf out of the water many times on her head to help save it from being eaten,” said Thomae.
The orcas forced their way between the mom and the calf so they could drown it.
Thomae said, “After a half hour of filming, the mother lifted the calf for its last breath, while an adult killer whale jumped out of the water, grabbing the calf off of its mothers head and taking it to the depths of the Monterey Bay Submarine Canyon.”
A pod of orcas killed another gray whale on April 25, This marks the fifth predation this month.
According to marine experts, mid April through mid May is when orcas hunt the northbound gray whales.
