Enforcement Operation set for Wednesday on Soquel Drive

An uptick in driver vs. pedestrian incidents is forcing the CHP in Santa Cruz County to take to the streets to find dangerous drivers.

On Wednesday the CHP will be monitoring crosswalks up and down Soquel Drive in Aptos and Santa Cruz. They say they’ll be looking for drivers who are not yielding to pedestrians in marked crosswalks, while also making sure those crossing the street are obeying the rules of the road. This operation is happening because of recent events over the last six months.

“In six months we have had three fatal crashes involving pedestrians who are walking across the street in the crosswalk, as well as serious injury crashes involving pedestrians who are walking,” said CHP Officer Trista Drake.

The extra enforcement is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration . The chp says any time you’re approaching a marked crosswalk, you should pay extra attention and slow down.
