03/21/18 5:45PM: A 16-foot Disaster Response trailer was taken from the Red Cross facility on Soquel Avenue in Santa Cruz.
The trailer was taken sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning. It was stocked with cots, blankets and other supplies used in emergencies. The supplies and trailer can cost up to $15,000.
Red Cross Spokesperson Jim Burns says it’s not just a loss for their organization, “the people that it really impacts are the people of the Central Coast who we serve during disasters like fires and floods and other things. The trailer was designed and stocked with emergency supplies and it’s the trailer that we take to set up a shelter somewhere in the Central Coast where and when it’s needed.”
Santa Cruz County residents KION spoke with says while it’s sickening someone would take that trailer, they are not surprised. “No, i’m not and that’s the sad part about it. Now a days everybody is taking and there’s not enough giving,” says Debbie Gronski.
Jo Wood says “well I’m not surprised that someone would take it, but it’s like shame on them. How dare you steal from the red cross, or Salvation Army or any organization trying to do good.”
Burns says the trailer is worth anywhere from 10-15 thousand dollars, which could end up coming from the Red Cross, “it’s not like we’re getting regular government subsidies for this kind of work. So when we lose something like this it’s really impactful. We’ll in the end have to replace it, and we’ll hopefully replace it before it’s needed, but we’d rather not replace it and that’s why were trying to put out the word that because we’d really like it to be returned.”
At the time it was taken the trailer had the American Red Cross lettering and logo with a “No. 6” stenciled on.
Anyone with information is being asked to call local law enforcement.
