Emergency bridge work near Castroville set for Tuesday
An emergency repair project on a bridge just outside downtown Castroville will get underway this morning.
“There have been some high profile incidents involving bridges in recent years, but we just want to ensure everyone that the bridges in the state highway system are in good condition,” said Caltrans PIO Jim Shivers.
Six people lost their lives in the Florida bridge collapse. I’m told every bridge and every overcrossing in California goes through an inspection every two years. Not only that, but the bridge itself can only be worked on by a Caltrans Bridge Engineer. On Tuesday emergency repairs will be happening on the 156 westbound just as you approach Castroville from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m..
“”Theres a small gap between the pavement and the bridge we will be filling in that gap with concrete to ensure a smooth ride for all motorists,” said Caltrans PIO, Jim Shivers.
There will be lane closure and motorists can expect delays around 20 minutes. The California Highway Patrol will be there to assist with traffic control. Big rigs and heavy loads will not be able to go over the bridge while this work is being done and will be routed a different way.
