Beach hazard alert in place through the weekend

Central Coast beaches can be beautiful and dangerous at the same time. Officials said that’s something visitors should keep in mind during this Halloween weekend, as a Beach Hazard alert is in place.

The National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazards Statement, advising beach goers of sneaker waves, rip currents and large shore breaks beginning at 2 p.m Friday through 9 p.m. Sunday.

The alert is for the entire coast from Big Sur all the way up past Fort Bragg.

Officials advise beach goers never to turn their back to the ocean, stay off rocks and stay back from the water.

Forecasters said they hope the message will reach travelers who are often unfamiliar with the danger posed by Central Coast waves. Rescuers agree, saying they get more calls on tourist-heavy holiday periods.
