Hollister schools could see additional SRO’s in the future
Earlier this month, two districts in Salinas voted unanimously against having officers in their schools, costing the Salinas Police Department a hefty grant. On the Monterey Peninsula SRO’s hang in the balance as budget constraints tighten, and up the road in Hollister, it’s a different story. “I definitely cant imagine not having our SRO’s. They’re true partners and they just happened to be partners with uniforms on,” said Hollister District Superintendent Dr. Andrew. Between the elementary, middles schools and one high school there are three SRO’s. “They provide education programs on gang resistance and bullying and having a positive school culture. They help out with traffic during pickup and drop off,” said Dr. Andrew. The city and school district split the cost of the officers. “Its a very cooperative environment. Both boards are 100% behind it. I think its great to have that effort in our schools and our community as well,” said Hollister Police Chief David Westrick. Don’t be surprised if Hollister does the opposite of Salinas and adds more resource officers to the schools. “I spoke to a board member the other day, and he said his dream was to have one at every single school. Economics will prevent that. But, I think there is room for one or more in the future,” said Chief Westrick. “Anytime we can have extra adults like that helping us in the education process I would be all for that,” said Dr. Andrew.
