6/14/17 6:09 p.m.: Weaving in and out of traffic and squeezing in between cars, in a stolen vehicle, suspect Darryl Haley led Salinas police on a chase around town Tuesday.

“I just saw the silver Honda, it looked like a Honda, just come in on the opposite side of traffic and it wasn’t stopping, and it was just causing a bunch of accidents everywhere,” said a witness, who would only give her fist name, Queen.

The pursuit was called off for safety reasons.

When the car was spotted again at Northridge Mall, officers went to stop the driver.

In response, Haley tried to back his car into a commander. That’s when an officer fired.

A second officer-involved shooting happened on Davis Road. The suspect first drove in the wrong direction before trying to back his car into an officer.

The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office said Haley was high on meth. He then drove down a steep embankment, trying to escape.

“There was a long foot pursuit that occurred after he had been shot. He ran. And this occurred at Davis and Market in that area. He ran a long distance. No weapon’s been recovered, other than his vehicle,” said chief assistant D.A Berkeley Brannon.

Officers eventually caught Haley. He was shot four times and is now being treated at a hospital.

Brannon said Haley has not been placed under arrest and the investigation is ongoing.

Both officers involved in the shootings have been put on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

UPDATED 6/14/2017 9:22 a.m.: Salinas Police Chief Adele Frese said there were two officer-involved shootings Tuesday afternoon.

Frese said the shootings started around 2 p.m. in South Salinas when a driver was spotted in a stolen car and officers tried to chase him, but had to call off the pursuit for safety reasons.

The car was later spotted at Northridge Mall and an officer tried to engage him there.

Police said the driver tried to back up his car into the police commander on North Main Street and Laurel Drive and the officer fired at the suspect.

The suspect then took off on Laurel westbound to Davis and then southbound on Davis. Eventually, the driver ended up going the wrong way on Davis, striking several cars and tried to back up his car into another officer, according to Frese. One of the crashes brought the suspect to a temporary halt.

During the chase, one driver said the suspect hit his vehicle: “It was just really fast, I just can’t believe how fast I went from, ‘yeah I see a police car going by,’ to ‘we’re in the middle of a crime’ in just seconds.”

When officers tried to intervene, the driver again attempted to back into them and an officer fired his gun. The suspect drove down a steep embankment on David Road and then took off on foot.

He was arrested between Davis Road and Victor Way and taken to a hospital.

The driver is currently in custody at a hospital. Police said the officers involved are doing fine.
