Humpback whales make a splash in Monterey Bay
Whale watchers and other passengers on Monterey Bay were treated to a visual feast when humpback whales smacked the water with their tails, breaching and putting on a show to the delight of spectators. The whales have made an impressive comeback as they journey to Monterey Bay from their breeding grounds in Mexico.
Princess Monterey Bay Whale Watching Owner-Operator Benji Shake said Humpback whales are a common sight in the Summer months however are less common in Spring.
“The humpback whales are here to feed on small bait fish like sardines and anchovies. We’re used to seeing them in the Summer months but it’s a semi-rare sighting at this time of the year,” Shake said.
“The grey whales have finished up here, they’re headed to Alaska but the humpbacks have started to come in and we’ll see them all through Summer, through to the Fall.”
