Arrest over death of Salinas man on Main Street

UPDATE: 3/25/17 1:29 P.M.: Salinas police have arrested 18-year-old Gaudalupe Rosas for the shooting death of the 43-year-old Salinas man last week.

Officers said he was arrested for the death of Jess Gonzales, who was killed near North Main and Massa Streets on March 23.

Police approached Rosas at a relative’s home in the 1500 block of Vineyard Ave n the city of Soledad. Working with the Soledad Police Department, Rosas emerged from the house and was taken into custody without incident.

PREVIOUS STORY: Officers said Gonzales was shot as he walked from the Shop N Save store on 2143 North Main Street.

A gunman approached Gonzales and shot him several times, officers said.

The suspect was described as a man dressed in dark clothing and last seen running northbound on North Main Street.

Officers said the motive for the shooting is unknown but they are investigating this homicide as gang related. This is the 12th homicide of the year in Salinas.

Salinas Police confirm the victim was a 43-year-old man from Salinas and a known gang member. He will not be identified until family is notified.

Officers say the ShotSpotter detection system recorded seven shots. Officers found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. First responders tried to help the man, but he died on scene. A motive is still unknown, however, based off evidence so far, its being investigated as gang related. Officers say someone was shot and killed there around 11:32 p.m. Thursday night. An investigations unit is on scene collecting evidence overnight.
