KION Meteorologist receives big honor
For three years now, our viewers have been tuning in to get weather forecasts and updates from a man who loves weather, and now, our own Dann Cianca has stepped up his weather game to a new level.
Dann’s love for the weather started early with the discovery of the Weather Channel.
“Weather maps 24 hours a day so i watched it all the time which drove my sister and all my cousins crazy because they didn’t want to watch the weather channel, they wanted to watch cartoons. but i was the oldest,” said Dann.
That fascination continued through his teen years.
“Everybody knew that i was obsessed with the weather. From elementary school to middle school to high school. In fact, in high school, everybody called me weatherman,” said Dann.
After getting a degree in meteorolgy, Dann started a new hobby…storm chasing. It’s something he still does today. on his vacations. His co-workers think it’s a bit, well, over the top.
“You wouldn’t catch me chasing anything that spun and threw cars at people but he will. He’ll do it,” said KION Editor, Alejandro Quintana.
Dann spends a lot of time in the weather center working on his forecasts, including microclimates across the Central Coast.
“I don’t want to use the word geek, but he certainly spends a lot of time thinking and talking about the weather, even when he’s not working on the weather,” said KION Anchor, Spencer Washburn.
Dann recently received the national weather association’s broadcast seal of approval, recognizing his outstanding communication in delivering the weather.
“It’s a way for me to tell the viewers that I’m committed to growing as a meteorologist and doing the best i can for them,” said Dann.
