Boy, 9, swept away at Monterey Beach dies

UPDATE 3/29/2017 12:18 PM: The young boy pulled from the water yesterday afternoon at Monastery Beach in Carmel has died.

The boy was fighting treacherous conditions, up to 12-feet waves, and although the boy’s father wanted to rescue his son, onlookers prevented him from entering the water.

Along with his parents, the boy was taken to a local hospital but died last night.

ORIGINAL STORY: A 9-year-old was washed out into the ocean at Monastery Beach in Carmel, Tuesday afternoon, according to Cal Fire. Rescue crews were able to pull him out of the water a short time later, after he drifted about 50 to 100 feet out into the water.

Two rescue swimmers and a boat were launched to bring him to safety.

The boy is being taken to the hospital and crews are not clear on his condition.
