Raiders’ move to Las Vegas has Central Coast fans ‘disappointed’
Fans on the Central Coast are upset.
NFL owners voted Monday to move the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas after Oakland’s new stadium plan didn’t impress.
Third generation Raider fan John Katich said it’s all his family can talk about.
“We have a group family text message going on right now and we’re just gonna play out the next two years and maybe go to a few more games, but after that, it’s probably going to be it for us,” Katich said.
Katich said he still respects the team but not its management.
“I don’t think it’s the players that really have the idea or they could really make the choice. I think a lot of it came down to the actual, uh, ownership,” Katich said.
Raiders’ owner Mark Davis said he understands fans are disappointed and hopes to explain the decision further in the coming days.
“My father used to say that the greatness of the Raiders is in its future, and the opportunity to build a world-class stadium in the entertainment capital of the world is one opportunity that would get us the ability to achieve that greatness,” Davis said.
Some fans say they won’t follow the Raiders once they move to Las Vegas.
“We went through a lot of years that they didn’t play well and we hung in there, and now they are playing well … they are moving. So it’s disappointing,” Salinas fan Gary Fortman said.
For Katich, it’s the camaraderie he’ll miss the most.
“It’s so great that they were able to bring so many people from the community together to fight for one thing,” Katich said.
Last year, the Raiders received $750 million to build a stadium in Las Vegas, and Davis is putting up $500 million himself.
Bank of America has said it will finance the rest.
The stadium is slated to open in 2020.
