Central Coast Congressman Jimmy Panetta is reacting to President Donald Trump’s first speech to Congress.
“The president can be commended for staying on script. Clearly he’s learning to sound like a president, but now the big question is whether or not he will find the ability to act like a president and that means not just using rhetoric and campaign speeches, but actually rolling up your sleeves and doing the actual policy work that’s necessary to get actual legislation. That’s taking the time to legislate and taking the time to work with not just Republicans but Democrats to get long lasting legislation done. If he’s willing to do that I will stand shoulder to shoulder with him,” said Panetta.
KION also asked Congressman Panetta what he thought about President Trump’s immigration policies and calls for a merit-based immigration system.
“I hope to hear more about what he said in regards to an actual compromise based on comprehensive immigration reform. Sure we can have a wall, but we must also ideally have a pathway to citizenship and change in the visa process. Growing up on the Central Coast of California as a grandson of immigrants of Italy, I’ve seen a lot of immigrants who have come here willing to contribute to our country and our community and to me that’s merit-based and that is what it is about and that’s something I hope to work on pushing forward some sort of immigration reform.”
Congressman Panetta went on to say he hopes President Trump won’t push a message of fear or an anti-immigrant message. Panetta said he is all for prosecuting and deporting violent people who are criminals who commit serious and violent crimes, but Panetta wants to make sure Trump isn’t working from a place of fear and would hope the president thinks about the future of immigrants.
Panetta said he looks forward to hearing more from President Trump when it comes to specifics on his policies.
