Local gym helping kids through boxing

A local boxing gym is producing nationally ranked fighters and helping kids in Salinas at the same time. Rock Boxing Gym on East Alisal has been up and running now for eleven years, and always seems to have nationally ranked boxers of all ages coming out of it. in fact, right now, rock gym’s owner Danny Corona says he has about ten fighters that are nationally ranked in the top ten. As impressive as that is, everyone that shows up isn’t just there for the boxing.

“Self defense. Making news friends,” said Jonas Soto and Daniel Esquivas.

“When we opened up the gym it wasn’t to make money or anything like that, it was to help out the community, help out kids, this is a love affair, there’s no money involved. You have to love this sport,” said Rock Boxing Gym Owner Danny Corona.

The gym is sponsored by a couple different organizations, which help it stay afloat as corona tries not to turn passionate fighters away for financial reasons. He says many of his student’s parents are field workers and pay him in produce. While Salinas sees a sad amount of youth violence every year, Corona says he wants his students to be a bright spot in the city.
