Salinas police investigate first deadly crash in 2017

Early Monday morning, a 20-year-old man was killed after hitting a tree head-on while speeding on E. Boronda Rd. according to Salinas police.

Officers said Abraham Jesus Requena lost control of his car and spun out, hitting a curb and slamming into a tree.

Investigators at the scene said Requena hit the tree so hard, the engine was torn from the car as it spun away, hitting a second tree and bursting into flames.

It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash. Police said there were not any witnesses and it appears no other cars were involved in the crash.
