Local volunteers knock on doors to gain support for Bernie in CA primary
With every knock volunteers are hoping to inspire people to use their right to vote and support Bernie Sanders in California’s primary.
“He no doubt has a chance, I mean the math is undeniable that he has a chance,” said Shawn Orgel, lead organizer for Santa Cruz for Bernie. “The question is can we hit the percentages that we need in the remaining states?”
They’re targeting voters who are undecided, registered in the American Independent party, Green party, American Peace and Freedom before the May 23rd voter registration deadline.
“We have a semi closed primary here, so you have to be a democrat in order to vote for Bernie or no party preference, but then you have to request a democratic ballot,” said volunteer Erik Eriksen. “A lot of people, especially in Santa Cruz are registered as green party.”
Other than their political knowledge and desire for the Vermont senator to become the next president, volunteers are equipped with a script and an ap that loads all the data and doors they need to hit. Being genuine is also key.
“I think it’s really good, I think a lot of people want to vote for Bernie but they don’t know where or how,” said Bernie supporter Sean Hoey. “I think a good kick in the butt is good for some people.”
Volunteers said they do run into people who are not as receptive, unanswered door knocks and hardcore Trump and Hilary voters, but it’s not about converting anyone.
“I’m not here to change someone that’s a Hilary supporter,” said volunteer David Reed.
“You just say thank you, I’m glad you’re involved in the process and you just move on,” said volunteer Daniel Drysdale.
While they hope Bernie wins, they told KION whether he scores a victory or not, they believe their grassroots efforts will have a lasting impact.
“We’re going to stay together as this strong network and community of political activist and turn our focus towards the local level,” said Eriksen.
The Santa Cruz Bernie Sanders headquarters is running a serious, organized ground game. Lead organizers told KION they will canvass every week day and weekend until the primary.
