UPDATE: Five fall 700 feet down cliff in South Monterey County, one dead
UPDATE 5/4/2016 4:15 PM: It has been more than a year since a young man was killed after the Jeep he was riding in fell 700 feet down a cliff in South Monterey County. That young man wasAndrew Kruep, 24.
According to a CHP report, the driver of the Jeep wasSpencer Blodgett, 24.
Andrew Kruep’s family told KION they did not want Blodgett to be charged and that Monterey County District Attorney Todd Hornik chose not to. Hornik confirmed with KION on Wednesday that the Kruep family did not want Blodgett charged.
UPDATE 4:01 PM: Five men in their 20s drove off a 700-foot embankment at Williams Hill Recreation Area near Lockwood on Bureau of Land Management property early Saturday morning after losing control of the vehicle, according to California Highway Patrol.
Officers said all five people in the 2010 Jeep weren’t wearing seat belts and were ejected during the crash while off-roading together.
It is unclear who was actually driving the jeep at the time of the crash. Officers said the jeep left a trail and Andrew Kruep, 24, of Los Altos Hills, was killed during the crash.
Officers said Lafayette resident, Spencer Blodgett, 24, and San Luis Obispo residents Myles Franklin, 21, Sean Mullen, 22, and Darren Mullen, 25, were rescued during a multi-agency response. All four were taken to the hospital.
Officers said no one was arrested and drugs or alcohol don’t appear to be a factor.
PREVIOUS STORY: One person died in a roll over crash early Saturday on Lockwood-San Lucas Road near Quail Estates, CAL FIRE authorities said.
Fire crews said they responded to the incident about seven miles north of Williams Hill, where a car rolled about 600 feet down a ravine.
CAL FIRE said four people needed medical help, and one was found dead. The Monterey County Urban Search and Rescue Team and a CAL FIRE inmate crew were called to rescue the victims.
