Toro County Park installs new wildlife waterer

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION) - Monterey County says a new water system out at Toro County Park will help wildlife stay hydrated this summer.

The county announced the installation of this wildlife waterer, also known as a guzzler.

It will collect and store rainwater during the long dry season, providing much-needed drinking water.

Guzzlers are primarily intended to help small birds and mammals, like snakes and lizards.

The county says Toro Park is an ideal location because water sources have been scarce since the river fire back in 2020.

"As soon as this was put in and as soon as we got enough rain that it started coming out the fill line for the drinking basin, animals were coming here. People called us as we were coming up right now, telling us there was deer drinking, there's was a couple of squirrels out out the water."

The guzzler was designed by the current chair of the county's fish and game advisory committee.

Commission members also donated materials and helped build it.
